Here & Now & Then: 1958

That the film reveals its big twist here and not at the end is one of Vertigo’s greatest gambits, and in doing so it offers a radical shift. No longer tied to the point of view of its leading man, this film, like two others I’ll look at from 1958, becomes a fascinating take on a complex, cracked-up woman that never tips over into female hysteria.
